Are pro bono, free court-appointed lawyers, or low-fee lawyers, good lawyers against DCF in Massachusetts? The answer to this question is absolutely yes, that pro bono or court-appointed lawyers, or low-fee lawyers, are excellent against DCF in Massachusetts. And the reason I can say that unequivocally is that, once upon a time, when I first started out, I was one of them. A lawyer is a lawyer is a lawyer. It’s like a rose is a rose is a rose. All lawyers have to go to law school, all lawyers have to pass the bar exam. All lawyers are highly skilled, trained, and knowledgeable. So there are many court-appointed lawyers, or pro bono lawyers, or lawyers at a low fee that are just positively outstanding at what they do. But the thing is, is that you just can’t generalize it or paint it with a broad brush. And yeah, some clients do that, talking about lawyers. There’s really good lawyers, regardless of where they come from or what they do or how much their paid, and there’s some really lousy lawyers, and that’s just life. That’s true of every segment of our society. There’s really good police officers, and there’s some that are caucus. There’s some really good probation officers or clerks or judges, or DCF attorneys or regular lawyers, and there’s some real bad ones. There’s some lousy ones. There’s some that just aren’t all that good, and that’s just life. And that’s true of everything. Last night, I was watching a basketball game. There’s some great NBA players, and there’s some that aren’t so great. Same thing in baseball and football and hockey and soccer and every other sport there is. There’s some that are the superstars and there’s some that aren’t so good, but that’s life, and that’s true of lawyers.
