So I’m an associate within the employment team at Slater and Gordon in the London office.

If ‘re going to work for employees in employment law in London, there really is only one place to be.

What drew me to employment law was that I had a background in criminal law. That was what I originally chose to go into after I left university and then the LPC. And what I enjoyed about criminal law was very much working for the individuals rather than working for big companies and get into the nitty gritty and everybody has a very personal case. I also liked the litigation side of it, so being able to stay in a court or a tribunal is definitely appealing.

At the end of the day you are helping somebody their life around again. You know, they’ve been discriminated against, for example, at work and they’re nervous about going in, trying to make it possible for them to remain in employment or if they don’t feel they remain there anymore, making sure that they’re in a position where they’re comfortable enough to be able to find something going forwards. It makes a huge difference the work that we do.

When I was eleven years old I rocked up in my mum’s kitchen and I said, “I’m going to be a lawyer,” and she said, “I know you are, you argue with me all the .”

So what motivates me, in terms of employment law, generally is the fact that employment law is an area of law that is continually changing, every day there’s a new case that comes through from the tribunals or from the appeals courts or new legislation that’s being made, so it’s always relevant. So every day is a bit of a learning curve. You come in every day and you never know what’s going to happen next.

Well Slater and Gordon is full of all sorts of very different people. You have people who were born and raised in London, you have people who come from different regions, all walks of life. It’s all very friendly. Everybody works in an open plan office so you can go and talk to anybody at any time, seek advice. No problems with that at all. It’s very much an open, collegiate environment.
